City officials have elected to cancel this year’s BBQ cook-off. Two years ago, City officials moved the BBQ cook-off from Old Town Helotes to the Helotes Festival Association grounds. The first year the cook-off was held at the HFA grounds, a company in Pearsall assisted the city with hosting the event. The company requested the City move the cook-off from May to the last weekend in January.
Last year, the City ended its association with the Pearsall sponsor and hosted the event as the major sponsor. The location and time were left the same.
This year, City officials elected not to continue the event. According to Mayor Tom Schoolcraft, “the event grew so large in size that we could not effectively host or conduct the event. We are sorry we will not be able to conduct this activity.”
According to one City official, the BBQ cook-off was cancelled because of the expense of the event. During the 2014 event, the City of Helotes invested a large sum of money into the event and the event did not generate enough revenue to cover the expense. During the 2015 event the City continued to lose money. Therefore it was decided that economically it was not advantageous to continue the event.
