Helotes’ annual Cornyval will open to the public today, Thursday, May 3. The Helotes Festival Association has added new attractions this year. Sammy Andrews, famed stock contractor will once again produce the PRCA rodeo.
The first performance of the rodeo will be Thursday night. Thursday is Tough Enough to Wear Pink night. This annual event reminds the audience of the true struggles against cancer, and each year the Festival Association provides funds to help in the fight to eradicate cancer.
Alamo Attractions will once again provide the carnival midway. Thursday night is arm band night for $20.00 a person can ride all the rides they wish.
The Helotes Festival Association produces Cornyval each year to support the many different non-profit organizations in Helotes. Numerous volunteers spend countless hours painting, and cleaning the festival grounds to make ready for the event.
The Association also provides at least 4 scholarships to area seniors. The scholarship presentation will be 3pm on Sunday.
If you do not support any event but one, this is the even that deserves your attention. The Helotes Festival Association is a non-profit organization. None of those involved with this organization receive any pay, except for the handshakes and thanks they receive during Cornyval. During the appreciation dinner, the Festival Association will return over $15,000 (not including the scholarships) to the other non-profits throughout the Helotes area. This organization could not complete their task without the patronage of you. So, dust off your boots (boots not required), grab your pink shirt (real men do wear pink), saddle your horse (cars and trucks ok), and ride down to the Festival grounds for a time to have fun and visit with your neighbor.
The Festival grounds are located on Leslie Road, right across from O’Connor High School. Don’t worry if you are late to the hitchin’ post you may park at O’Connor High School. The Festival Association provides a free trolley that shuttles festival goers back and forth from the grounds to the parking area for free. We are country—we provide hospitality but there is nothing but big time funawaiting you at this year’s Cornyval.
