Long time Taft principal succumbs to illness

The Taft High School community is saddened by the loss of longtime Principal Tommy Garcia who died on Tuesday after a short illness.

Garcia had served as Taft’s Principal since July 1, 2004.

Garcia, a 35-year veteran educator, was born July 28, 1960 in San Antonio. He earned both his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Our Lady of the Lake University. After teaching for two years at St. Joseph Elementary School, Garcia spent nine years as a teacher and coach in Southside ISD where he was named the district’s Teacher of the Year in 1986. Beginning in 1993, he served as an Assistant Principal and Principal in South San Antonio ISD.

The Taft High School community extends heartfelt condolences to Garcia’s family.
