Corpus Christi prevailed in another tight contest with the Missions Sunday night by squeezing out a 3-2 victory at Whataburger Field.
The Texas League South Division leaders, who pulled off a 5-4 come-from-behind with Alex Bregman’s walk-off home run in the 10th inning Saturday, had to overcome another deficit. However, this time the Hooks rallied much sooner.
Down, 2-1 in the fifth, the Hooks tied the score when Teoscar Hernandez doubled off Missions’ starter Ken Lloyd (2-3) and touched home plate on Nick Tanielu’s single. A balk then pushed across the go-ahead run.
Reliever Aaron West (4-0), who took over for starter Brian Holmes in the fourth, shut down the Missions, allowing three hits over the next three innings, before Brendan McCurry (13th save) closed out the victory after zipping through the eight and ninth.
San Antonio took a 1-0 lead in the first.
Auston Bousfield led with a single to left, moved to second on River Stevens’ sacrifice bunt and scored on Nick Schulz’s single.
Corpus Christi tied the score in the bottom of the inning, but the Missions moved back in front in the second on Stevens’ RBI single.
Lloyd handcuffed Corpus Christi’s bats the next three innings before the Hooks changed their luck in the fifth,
