Armed Standoff in Helotes ends with individual in custody

Helotes police officers responded to a disturbance on Seven L on Wednesday, February 7 around noon. A neighbor notified Helotes Police Department of an intoxicated man who was standing in his backyard with a shotgun.

Police arrived and found other individuals in the home.

The grandmother came outside the house and made contact with Helotes police. She informed police there were more guns inside the home and her grandson had expressed the intentions he would not go peacefully.

This same individual had made threats in the past against Helotes Police Department and Helotes First Responders.

Upon receiving this news, Helotes Police called San Antonio Police Department and requested the aid of SWAT.

San Antonio PD sent the Bearcat, and a full regiment of SWAT officers. Also assisting San Antonio PD was Bexar County SWAT.

SWAT team members found the individual outside on the back deck. They issued commands for him to drop his weapon and give himself up to law enforcement. The individual refused to obey commands forcing SWAT to use no lethal forces striking the individual with beanbag rounds.

The suspect was taken into police custody. Members of the Helotes PD processed the house where they located additional handguns, shotguns, and marijuana. Helotes PD took all these items into their custody.

The individual was taken to University Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries. Doctors also performed a psychological evaluation before taking him to the magistrate’s office.

He was then taken and processed through the Bexar County Magistrates office and placed in jail.

According to information available at this time, the individual is still in jail waiting for someone to post his bond or to stand trial.

He is also awaiting trial on previous charges.

No police officers were injured during the standoff.
