On Sunday, May 7 at 2:30am, a black Mercedes Benz driven by Denys Martinez traveling at a very high rate of speed ran the red light at Bandera and Evers Road.
Rita Martinez, driving a Hyundai Tucson southbound on Evers Road entered the intersection facing a green light.
The black Mercedes Benz struck the Tucson at the driver’s door causing the vehicle to flip over and slide down Bandera Road. The Mercedes spun out of control down Bandera Road until it arrived at uncontrolled stop.
The initial reports of an infant being transported in the Tucson was erroneous.
Paramedics transported, Daysi Cortes-Castillo, the lone passenger in the Mercedes Benz to the hospital; where she underwent surgery.
Officers on the scene evaluated the driver of the Mercedes for signs of intoxication. Paramedics transported the driver to the hospital with serious injuries. While at the hospital, a warrant was secured to draw blood from the Mercedes driver. Officers booked by proxy the driver for Intoxication Manslaughter and Intoxication Assault.
The driver of the Tucson, Rita Martinez, was pronounced dead at the scene.
